OTTO - Derek M. Of Springville, NY, unexpectedly passed on May 28, 2023, at Buffalo General Hospital, at the age of 46. He will be remembered for his vast volume of knowledge and ability to communicate on all levels to all ages. He is a graduate of Springville Griffith Institute and went to Houghton College. He was a student teacher in Arcade, NY. After graduating, he began working in Hornell as a Library Media and Information Specialist, changing library systems from decimal to new digital systems, along with computers and classes. During that time, he also was going to UB in Buffalo at night to obtain his masters. Family oriented, he moved back to Springville and worked in Gowanda updating library and setting up computer classes. Derek was involved with the Springville Historical Society alongside Dave Batterson, his highlight was the Lucy Bensley Genealogy Library. He interviewed people about the past and would write articles for the town paper. Mrs. Jack Yellen was a favorite. The return of the town clock, cemetery tours were a few of the other things he did. Derek was the son of the late Dennis Otto, Sr. and survived by his mother, Judy; brother of Christ Otto and Dennis Otto, Jr. (Kim Burch); uncle to Isabella, Karly, Dalton, Kendra, aunt Lynda (late Tom) Press, Linda (Ted) Hapak, Cheri (late Gary) Wheeler and the late Alex Hedges.
